When designing for venues such as the Edmonton Opera and the Alberta Craft Council Gallery with the Opera Art Project I find it a great inspiration in my designs. The Opera Art Project was a group of local Artist’s who often design various pieces that are inspired by the Edmonton Opera’s Productions. Various Galleries and establishments my designs were available in: Alberta Craft Council Gallery Store (Edmonton and Calgary), Art Gallery of St. Albert, Alberta Branded, Discover Alberta (Edmonton International Airport). My Designs are not available at these locations at this time, I am taking a break from the finished garment end of my business so I can spend some time learning about Weaving and begin a new journey in Fibre Arts. Follow my Blog as I begin a new journey with Weaving and continue with my Crochet Designs and Patterns.
My knitting passion started when I was 18 and with a homespun knitwear business, called “Hey, Diddle Diddle” developing in 1996. Progressing from designing and knitting ready to wear children’s hats, sweaters and woman’s wear to the knitting world. Writing and designing patterns for my own line of designs and for the knitting magazine “Cast On” (Knitting Guild of America’s magazine). I began adding crochet to my designs when a friends mother showed me how. I am very thankful for that as it was the beginning of my Crochet journey (most of my designs are now made with crochet).
Most of my creativity comes from things in my environment such as nature, colours, shapes, people and anything that catches my eye, inspiring me to create. The texture, colour, feel and quality of Natural Yarns and Pure Fibres are my favourite to use in my unique designs.
As I continue to grow and expand my artistic business, my designs will continue to change and evolve into new and creative exciting pieces. My goal is to make, design and pattern beautiful pieces to adorn your wardrobe. I hope to add flare and style to any wardrobe, for any season, with a unique characteristic quality of the person who has chosen to wear Valerie Baber Designs.
