The Classic Crochet Ribbed Scarf is a perfect addition to any wardrobe for men, women and kids.  The classic ribbed design can be made with five mini skeins as shown in the photos or in a solid or hand painted yarn too.  Designed by Valerie Baber of Valerie Baber Designs just for you to warm your day with a classic style.  Easy to make crocheted scarf that can be worn in various ways.  Made with a fingerling/sock weight yarn to keep you warm and cozy in the colder days.  The Classic Crochet Ribbed Scarf is one you will wear for years to come.

Yarn:  Shown in 1 set of Party of Five mini skeins by SweetGeorgia Yarns, or you can use approximately 535 yards, 480 m of fingerling/sock weight yarn if you are making a solid coloured scarf, or use 5 small balls of yarn approximately 110 yards, 100 m. Check that you work the same measurements I have listed making changes at your end as necessary.

Finished Measurements:  60 inches, 152.4 cm long by 4.5 inches, 11.25 cm wide.

Gauge:  My tension was 5 hdc’s and 4 rows of hdc bl rib pattern equaled 1 inch.

Crochet Hook:  I used USA terminology for crochet stitches, US 0-1 H (2 to 2.25mm) hook for the fingerling/sock weight yarn.  You may need to use one size up or down depending on your tension.

Other supplies:  Yarn needle to sew in ends.

Pattern Essentials:

ch – chain

hdc – half double crochet

hdc bl – half double crochet in the back loop only

RS – Right Side

sc – single crochet

sl st – slip stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

Base of Scarf:

The Classic Crochet Ribbed scarf is perfect for everyone and can be made with various colours as shown including gradient yarns, variegated yarns or solid colours.  If using mini skeins or small balls of yarn, choose the colours you are going to use and number them in the order you want them to flow beginning on the outside edge working to the other side.  A classic crochet scarf that can be made for woman, men, teens and children (I would make it shorter for children).

Starting with Colour 1: Ch 302 sts.

Row 1:  Continue in Colour 1, hdc in 3rd ch from hook (counts as 1st hdc), hdc in next st, hdc in each st to end of row (300 sts). Turn,

Row 2:  Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc), in the next st work 1 hdc bl (into the back of the loop), continue working 1 hdc bl (into the back of the loop) of the next st and on each st to the end of the row.  Turn,

Row 3 & 4: Colour 2, repeat row 2.

Row 5 & 6: Colour 3, repeat row 2.

Row 7 & 8: Colour 4, repeat row 2.

Row 9 & 10: Colour 5, repeat row 2.

Row 11 & 12: Colour 4, repeat row 2.

Row 13 & 14: Colour 3, repeat row 2.

Row 15 & 16: Colour 2, repeat row 2.

Row 17 & 18: Colour 1, repeat row 2.

Scarf Trim:  (The trim is a row of sc’s around the scarf in colour 5)

(RS) Starting at the beginning of one long side of the scarf (1st stitch on that edge), in colour 5 (Cauldron) sl st into the first st on that edge, ch 2, (counts as 1st sc), sc each st along the side to the last st, sc the last st, ch 1 to go around the corner, sc the 1st st on the next side to make a nice corner edge on the scarf. Sc 24 sts evenly along the short edge of the scarf. After the last st on this section ch 1 to go around the corner, sc the 1st st on the next long side of the scarf, sc in each st along this side to the last st, sc the last st, ch 1 to go around the corner, sc the 1st st on the next side to make a nice corner edge on the scarf. Sc 24 sts evenly along the short edge of the scarf, sl st into the beginning st.

Fasten off and sew in all yarns.
