These designs are also available as finished garments on my Etsy store as well (please note my NEW Etsy store link is above) Various colours to choose from if you need a gift or don’t have time to knit it yourself.
Gentle Waves Collection includes knitting pattern for the Cowl or Collar style scarf, Ear Warmer and Fingerless Gloves by Valerie Baber Designs. Pattern is designed with worsted weight merino wool. The yarn shown in these pictures is Malabrigo Rios. Wonderful textured scarf with flowing waves warming up a cooler day bringing memories of the warmer days of summer. Uses Worsted Weight Merino wool or yarn with similar gauge and weight as Malabrigo Rios.
This design is a unique addition to any wardrobe with the stunning Hand Painted Merino Wool base. The Gentle Waves scarf is inspired by the oceans, sea and other bodies of water with the gentle waves combined with the 3D waves rolling about the scarf. The colours reflect the water and the surrounding nature and other items around the body of water.
This design is great in any colour way with examples above or try including greys, neutrals, or other brighter colours.
Great for Spring, Fall and Winter to keep you warm and cozy.

What’s new these days…the Ocean Breeze Beach Stone scarf and more. This design is an extension of the Calming Waters Collection that I will be periodically adding to as the Fall and Winter progress to add a touch of the warm memories of summer. This colour way is a One of a Kind since I only made one and have no more of the beautiful Sepia toned yarn. I wanted to do a scarf of the beach to reminisce the moments of walking along by the waters edge with all the interesting and beautiful sensations of the shore. The sand between your toes and coolness of the water and sand beneath you. Ahhh, just enough memories of the beach to keep you warm in the colder seasons. The waves on the scarf and on the trim are the imprints left by the water cascading by. This designs comes with an embellished broche with beach stones and some plant life and seaweed strewn about. The broche is removable
and can be worn on other items in your wardrobe or as shown. This design is versatile and can have a more modern eclectic feel when worn without the broche. You can view this design and others in the collection on my Etsy store here: http://www.intricateknits.etsy.com
I have been also busy adding some designs that have a more simple feel, yet still have a certain style to them. Here are two of my other recent designs with chunky and bulky yarns from Malabrigo Yarns. www.malabrigoyarn.com Both of these yarns are super soft and wonderful to work with.
The Anna Collar Scarf has an eclectic yet traditional feel to the design. This one is done in the Mecha yarn by Malabrigo Yarns. The next one below is the Lauren Scarf. This one too has a similar feel, but is different and has an asymmetrical base that can be worn to the side or center of your neck to keep you warm where your coat opens. Links to these scarves and more information is below.
The Rose Onie Collar scarf has two more colours available. One with a Black background and one in purple. Take a look here.
Eclectic Essence Collar Scarves were one of my new designs last Fall. I wanted to combine various hand painted merino wools with other wonderful fibers including Alpaca, LLama, Cashmere, Silk and other fine yarns. A small collar style neck warmer style scarf that was light, warm and cozy. Then embellish to add that special touch and unique flair to the design.
I used Malabrigo Rios Merino Hand Painted Wool on the bases in two different colour ways to start. Proceeded with various fibers noted above to embellish with flowers and leaves to add some interest in corresponding colours. The Eclectic Essence Collar Scarf adds a unique feel to your wardrobe with lots of colour to brighten those cold winter days.
To compliment the Eclectic Essence Collar Scarf I added some Eclectic Essence Fingerless Gloves. Got to keep your hands warm and toasty so you can keep tweeting, Facebooking and emailing in comfort. I used the same Malabrigo yarn and added Asland Trends Baby Alpaca and Baby Llama to the mix. Gave the hand warmers a bit of ruffle to go with the Eclectic Essence Scarves. Crocheting can be very sculptural and a great way to add that special touch to a design.
I love designing different pieces keeps my mind interested and I find I accomplish more as I am excited to try something new on the next design to see where it goes. I usually have various things going at the same time as this works for me. There will be more designs with and Eclectic Flair later this Fall. Off to play with my needles and some yarn. Have a great one today.
Roses R… The Rose Onie Scarf and Collection has been keeping me busy these days as I design the new Rose Onie Fingerless Gloves and Head Scarf/Ear Warmer. This is my all time favourite scarf I have designed, mostly because it is a dedication to my Mother. My mom was an amazing woman with great strength and wisdom. She always encouraged us to do our best and try new things. Her love of the Arts, Music, and being creative has influence all those who knew her. She was very artistic and always busy creating something new when she had some extra time.
When I decided to design a special scarf for my mother I picked the Rose and off I went to add them to a scarf of leaves and vines. The sculptural feel and design add a timeless look to the piece. The Rose Onie Collection is now available in other colours as shown in pictures below or click on this link to view. www.intricateknits.etsy.com To add that special touch to the scarf I decided to expand the collection add in the Rose Onie Fingerless Gloves and the Rose Onie Head Scarf or Ear Warmer.
Last week my daughter and I decided to have some fun taking pictures of the Rose Onie Collection. It was a true joy that day, working together like my mother and I used to do. My mother inspired and continues to inspire me everyday. My Mother, “Onie”, was my all time HERO!
Be inspired by those you love now and in the past. Creating something in memory of them is an amazing therapy and joy. Do something fun today that brings you happiness and enjoy your day!
One of my favourite items to design are Fingerless Gloves. They are so practical where I live. Having something to warm your hands in this techno savvy world yet keeping your fingers free to use is a perfect addition to your wardrobe in the cooler seasons. The Rach X-Long Fingerless Gloves are my elbow length hand warmers. I used two strands of yarn to get the texture and colours I was trying to achieve. A mix of two hand painted merino wools or a hand painted merino wool with an alpaca yarn was used. In this case I used Malabrigo Worsted Merino and Malabrigo Rios Merino yarns.
I love making these dramatic hand warmers and have to say they are one of the designs that catch peoples attention when I am at the local Farmers Market. People just have to try them on. It is interesting to watch what attracts different peoples attention in my booth. I love the interaction with my customers and hearing their viewpoints on my designs. There are always those who don’t appreciate the price point, but once I explain the fibers I am using they start to understand. I have always believed if you are taking the time to make something special you should use the best quality yarns you can afford. It takes time to make each piece and you want to make sure it lasts. Besides if you are going to all this effort aren’t you worthy of a something special.
This set is done in burgundy. You can see my newest designs at www.intricateknits.etsy.com or my website www.vbaberdesigns.com and link to Etsy from there. I am currently working on new designs including the new Rose Onie Fingerless Gloves in various colours perfect for fall. Just link below to view. This style comes in Red, Black, Grey, Ivory, Natural, Silver with the roses the same colour or in a contrasting colour of your choice. I will be posting more of these colours in the next few days. It compliments the Rose Onie Scarf, first link below. As well I am currently designing an Ear Warmer to match. Look for it soon.
Just a quick peek at what I was working on this week. Managed to finish another Ocean Breeze scarf this time in a medium blue green combination.
The embellished coral reef broche is done in colours with a brighter quality than the last one. All I can say is I really need my beach fix this summer. In my mind there is nothing better than heading for the beach on a holiday. Of course you must bring your yarn and some needles in case you are inspired to do more knitting or crocheting. I like to combine these two skills together. Makes such an interesting outcome. Try it, You will be hooked, (sorry had to write that), in no time. You can view this new designs and my others at https://www.etsy.com/listing/154634014/ocean-breeze-scarf-waves-and-coral-blue?ref=shop_home_feat or www.intricateknits.etsy.com
The other piece is another infinity scarf with the new Mecha by Malabrigo Yarns. I seriously think you should all try this yarn out. It is wonderful.
I also was able to finish designing a few pieces with the Rasta Merino wool by Malabrigo Yarns. This design has a nice chunky feel with amazing colours and an added touch of an embellished broche. Adds that unique touch that can be removed and used on another piece in your wardrobe. If you are feeling like less is more than wear the scarf without the broche in the long version or buttoned up to the cozy neck warmer. A multi tasking scarf great for the cold days of winter.
Luckily we don’t have to worry about that yet as it is the first day of Summer here. The beach is calling my name and as you see obviously on my mind. So if you can, head for the beach, river, lake or your favourite local scene today and see what inspires you. Have a great first day of Summer!
