It has been a long hard 10 weeks since I injured my right arm especially since I haven’t been able to knit or crochet since then and still not able to. I have to say it is almost torture for a designer not to design and create everyday, but at the same time it gives you rest (even though your kicking and screaming LOL). The injury progressed to my left arm due to over use looking after the right arm and then angered my neck and shoulders so just when I thought I was making head way everything was a mess. Glad to say that this week I finally feel like I am getting back to doing some things myself again and it feels great. Part of my injuries was over use from working to hard on my creations, but you know you just have to knit and crochet as it’s so much fun. I did try to dabble a little with more pattern writing, perhaps I will work on that again soon.
I hope in the next few months that I can once again pick up my needles and create new pieces. Luckily I was working on new designs all year prior to my injuries and will have more new designs on my Etsy store soon. You can also link with www.valeriebaberdesign.com for my new Etsy Website.
The Floral Pussy Willow Scarf is inspired by the soft colours and texture of pussy willows with a floral touch. This design is a 2 scarf combination with the base of the scarf the Classic Touch scarf with the leaf frieze vine accent scarf and a floral pussy willow brooch. Available in various colours as well can be ordered in brighter colours too. You can wear this design in various ways as shown or use the accent scarf and brooch on other items in your wardrobe. Hand warmers shown are the Classic Essence hand warmers.
This design is a classic and elegant addition to your unique style with a softness like pussy willows in colour and texture. The flower centre has 5 pussy willows finishing it off and made with kid mohair, silk and merino wool. The entire piece is made with beautiful yarns from http://www.sweetgeorgiayarns.com
Itty Bitty Kitty Child size fingerless gloves or hand warmers are one of my newest designs for Fall 2015. I decided I needed to relive the past with a new addition. I started my designing career with children’s wear for unique boutiques in the Toronto area and a few other places in Canada. Here is one of the first editions to my Girl Power series now available on my Etsy store http://www.valeriebaberdesigns.etsy.com or visit me at the St. Albert Farmers Market the Saturday’s in September and a couple in October, see more on my website at http://www.vbaberdesigns.com
The Itty Bitty Kitty hand warmer is made with beautiful yarns from Sweetgeorgia Yarns, http://www.sweetgeorgiayarns.com I chose to use the beautiful yarn for my children designs as I find merino wool the most allergy friendly wool, luxurious and soft, warm, washes well and great for wearing. The beautiful colours of this wonderful yarn are the other reason I chose them to design with. I can’t get enough of this yarn.
There are more to come with the Flower Child hand warmer, Puppy Love hand warmer, Sweet Heart hand warmer to name a few. The Itty Bitty Kitty book was one of my daughters favourite books growing up and to date. She has now ventured into adulthood which is one of the reasons why this journey back in time designing and making children’s wear has been so enjoyable. I started my original business just after my first child was born and continued for years until I took a break to go to Interior Decorating and Interior Design school. As you see now I have ventured to a new direction with Woman’s accessories etc.
My Children were both my design models and inspiration from the start and continue to be two of the most important people in my life. Love ya Kids!!!!
More Architectural Inspiration scarves with a floral stone tracery feel. All of these designs are available for order at http://www.valeriebaberdesigns.etsy.com This group of scarves new this season were inspired once again by the many Gothic Cathedrals of the past especially the Milan Cathedral. This amazing building was designed and built by many architects, artists, craftsmen and so many more. It is one of the most decorated Gothic Cathedrals that took over 200 years to build. The various architects used a lot of floral inspiration in their stone tracery throughout the Milan Cathedral as shown below.
The various floral accents on the Floral Tracery Gothic Cathedral Inspired scarves were inspired by the Milan Cathedral and other Gothic Cathedrals of the past. As mentioned in my previous blogs I will be restarting my Architectural project as you can see why. There is so much inspiration that I felt I needed to go another direction and begin my project with various Architectural buildings to pull my inspiration from. I will be adding these designs to my work soon for Fall and Winter 2015/16.
It amazes me the incredible amount of work that has gone into these beautiful buildings. I am awed at their creativity and design as each Gothic Cathedral stands alone in unique stature expressing the Architect, Artist and Craftsmen ideas and design skills that have stood for many years in their beautiful strength. The Gothic Architecture era had a huge impact on how we design and build today.
Check my website soon for dates I am at the local St. Albert Farmers Market in the fall as well some of my work will be at another booth by the library at the Wiggles and Giggles booth. Website: www.vbaberdesigns.com
The Floral Stone Tracery Scarf is made with a stone wall essence on the base of the scarf in the colours of various stones. The inspiration for this set of scarves is the amazing stone tracery on Architecture of the past. The elaborate and fascinating artwork that was involved in designing and making the stone tracery is outstanding. For these smaller scarves, more of a cowl size, I have choosen to put a few stone tracey flowers to accent the design. I will be changing the stone tracery as I go along focusing on different types of stone tracery. Other colours will be available in the future.
This is likely my favourite collection to design to date. The ideas and inspiration continue to flow with some bigger and more elaborate pieces to come soon. I love Architecture of the past and present and will continue to add this to my future designs. Stay tuned for more of the Architectural Collection by Valerie Baber Designs. You can purchase my designs at http://www.valeriebaberdesigns.etsy.com or check me out on Instagram http://www.instagram.com/vbaberdesigns or Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/vbaberdesigns for pictures of my other designs and the newest pieces.
Happy belated New Years to all of you. Had a wonderful Christmas and New Years with a house full of family. Great times! Now I must get back to work playing with yarn (I know, it’s a hard, hard job). 🙂
This year, to celebrate New Year and start off on the right foot, I decided that I would make myself the first scarf of the year. Kind of a late Christmas present. I usually don’t have time or take the time to make myself my own designs, not sure why, perhaps I just run out of time. I find when I am working on something new I decide I will want one of the newest styles instead, yet somehow I keep forgetting to make myself one. None the less I controlled my desire for my next design dancing around in my head and picked the Rose Onie Bulky X-Long scarf in a lovely Grey Blue Hand Painted Merino Wool by Malabrigo Yarns. This is done in their Mecha yarn, new this year done in absolutely lovely colour ways and extremely soft. The best part was finishing the scarf on New Years day! Great way to start a new year! I am currently working on some hand warmers for myself to match. Below are a few other colours also available in this cozy warm scarf.
I have been busy working on some new designs for the New Year. Some will have “One of a Kind” hand spun fibres and other unique yarns. I love seeing what I can design with specialty yarns, they are a great starting point for something completely unique. I am looking forward to getting back into more pattern writing later on this year so keep an eye on my blog to see what I design for this end of my work. I will continue to offer some free patterns to compliment my blog as well this year.
I love a new year, it is the perfect time to reflect on the last year and all you did and accomplished as well look forward to a new year of exciting adventures to come. Have a wonderful start to your New Year!!
What’s New…Rose Onie Scarf Collection in new colours. Just a peek into what I have been busy designing in the last few weeks. These Rose Onie designs are all custom orders from wonderful clients that wanted to add their own inspiration and style to my Rose Onie Design. The darker ones give a wonderful eclectic feel to this sculptural design.
I love enhancing and changing my designs to be specific for the person who will be wearing them. Makes the design a little more special for that person and another way for me to be inspired by their choices as well. I love the challenge that custom work gives me, like trying to solve a puzzle. As my family
would attest, I love puzzles especially the last piece you put in and finally complete it. That is how I feel when I am designing! Nothing better than finishing that designing puzzle and seeing the complete finished piece. Addictive for sure!
As I have said before you never know where you inspiration will come from. Keep your eyes and ears open for something new to discover and try.
What’s new today and a peek at what I have been making. I just finished one of the Rose Onie Scarves in a lovely Silver Grey. Again I used the Diamond Yarn luxury Aran weight Super Wash Merino Wool. The silver grey has a hint of blue undertone to it which adds such a lovely touch. I just finished a Rose Onie design in a collar neck warmer style scarf. You can see a picture below. The price point will be lower too. This one is the longest version at 39 to 40 inches long. It also comes in a slightly shorter version of 35 inches long with a smaller price tag. Goes great with a shirt or use on a jacket. Can be worn tied up as a sculptural neck warmer too. See more of my Rose Onie scarves at www.intricateknits.etsy.com or my website at www.vbaberdesigns.com
The Rose Onie Neck Warmer, Collar Scarf has been playing in my mind for months. I wanted to make a version of the Rose Onie Scarf that has the same essence, but smaller size. I actually started this scarf yesterday morning and finished designing and making it last night. Like I said it had been in my mind for while so I had lots of mind time to figure out the design and change it in my head before I started it. I like designing most on a whim and just seeing what I end up achieving. Sometimes there are failures but most of the time it is a successful venture for me. Though I have to say I have been designing this way for quite some time and at the beginning it was a lot of failures. Practice makes perfect they say, well at least it makes you better at it.
I love the challenge of trying to figure out problems with the design as I work. It’s just what works best for me when I am designing. Kind of a free form method, it is exciting, but you do have to expect some UFO’s along the way. I try to figure out what to do with those too as I don’t like to throw out the yarn. Sometimes you just have to unravel and start again. I find it is worth the risk just to see what I can design from scratch. Don’t worry, I design the conventional way too, this is just more fun for me.
Here is a picture of the Rose Onie Collection in the Silver Grey with the Long Scarf, Fingerless Gloves and the new Ear warmer. It is available on my Etsy store as a collection and each separately.
Check your local yarn store to purchase this lovely yarn. If you live locally in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada you pick up some of this fantastic yarn at www.rivercityyarns.com This great knitting store has plenty of yarns to choose from with all kinds of great knitting and crochet accessories. Their courses are fabulous and I have taken many, always impressed.
Off to blog about the “Water Works” Collection I have been working on for the Fall and Winter. A little something to keep your favourite lake, ocean and beach memories near you to warm the colder days. Have a great one today! Don’t forget to be inspired by things around you.
